So, Portland. When I left 7 years ago I felt pretty safe. I'd had some iffy experiences but could usually take the drunk 57 from Beaverton TC at 2:00am and not feel particularly threatened or freaked out. Same with Max out to 122nd at like 11:00pm. When I was there in June though, my sister and mother were like 'take a taxi!!!' That was kind of strange.

I've noticed things are getting a little more gentrified, the Pearl and NW across Burnside still has a whole lot of crack, but isn't as run down as I remember.

I almost cried when I went into what used to be Meier and Frank. Macy's is so.... sanitary. I think they cleaned up the Meier and Frank sub-basements as well. Which sucks, they were crazy ghost town type places. I was heartbroken to see they'd finally ripped down that building that had the VC in it.

So, tell me what's getting better? What's getting worse? Is it still safe to wander the streets of downtown? Or take the drunk bus at 2:00am? Will I need to invest in some mace? What neighborhoods that were previously terrifying are now ok?

And a rather more specific question, how are the hairdressers doing? Is it easy to get started? Or is the er, credit crisis, killing that industry as well?

And, seeing as I'm not keen on the large dog bark, is it at all possible to find apartments that won't accept the lie that someone's Rottweiler is 25 pounds?!

Edit: Please to be nostalgia-ing with me too.

Edit2: And! And! If there are any expats from Britian-land that can tell us where to find brown sauce, my husband will be eternally grateful.
